The first iteration of the Studio was set up by Chandra Kanta Solanki, a trailblazer who stepped into the textile world with determination and vision. The beginnings were humble — helping her cousin source fabric from Jaipur for his garment business in Lucknow. Over the years, that matured to manufacturing hand block-printed garments for leading exporters in Delhi and Mumbai. With her skills in stitching and a deep belief in herself, she defied social norms in India at a time when few women led such ventures. Her son, Ajay Solanki, joined the Studio when he was just 20. He had a passion for detail and a designer’s eye, inspired by his father who was a celebrated artist himself. A serendipitous visit from two Japanese buyers, who unknowingly brought along swatches of the Studio’s own past work, opened doors to the Matre's first international partnership.Ajay collaborated closely with block printers in Bagru, refining techniques and elevating quality to meet international standards. The Studio uses many wooden blocks from that era even today, and many of the artisan families are part of the extended Matre community.Ajay’s wife, Rekha, joined the Studio in the early 2000s. With a background in art and an intuitive sense for production, Rekha trained women from diverse backgrounds, helping them develop exceptional embroidery skills and financial independence.Aarika and Rishabh, Ajay and Rekha’s children, grew up surrounded by piles of fabric and stories of craft. Perhaps unsurprisingly, both of them joined the Studio in 2013, inspired by their legacy of excellence and with a passion to preserve and evolve their heritage.
Today, Matre Studio works with a range of crafts: from traditional hand block printing to intricate aari-zardozi and hand embroidery. The Studio's clients are bespoke, design-forward brands from Japan, Australia, France, and the United States.Matre promotes hand-spun, hand-woven textiles from artisan clusters across central India, and continues to expand its collection of vintage Kantha textiles from Bangladesh. Every jacket, cushion, and garment is carefully cut by hand, and designed to be one of a kind.Through every generation, the goal has remained the same: to create textiles that tell a story of heritage, craftsmanship, and enduring quality.
